Every once in awhile I forget I live in Boulder. Thank God for nights like tonight. I was standing in the back of my apartment building chatting it up with my buddy Rick. Looking over Rick’s shoulder I notice this girl dodging in and out of her backyard fence with a flashlight. She’d emerge from her yard and shine her light on the sidewalk. After four or five times of this cycle I had to ask her what she was doing.
Abby: Oh there is a baby wasp nest on the ground and I’m just looking at the larvae.
Me: Oh - that’s pretty interesting - so if you have the nest with the larvae - where are the wasps?
Abby: Well - i’ve already gotten stung twice this week - they are in our back yard…
Me: And you’re playing with their nest?
Abby: Yeah, I think they’re sleeping or something - they don’t seem to be bothered by it
[Enter roommate Jewel]
Jewel: We’re going to put the wasp nest in a jar and put it in our fridge.
Me: Why?
Jewel: I don’t know - haven’t you ever put bugs in the fridge?
Me: No. (this is sounding a bit strange)
Jewel: Oh, well when you put bugs in the fridge they get tired and you can poke them and stuff - then when they wake up they just fly away, no big deal.
Me: Poke them and stuff? What for?
Jewel: [shoulder shrug] I don’t know…
Me: So what are you guys studying in school, entemology?
Jewel: No, Nothing even like that.
Me: So you just like poking bugs?
Jewel and Abby: [shoulder shrug of approval]
