Gilpin County
Who knows where that is? runuphillracing.com sponsored a 12 miler at Golden Gate Canyon Park today - It was awesome! Just 15 miles west of Golden, one of the more challenging and beautiful courses I have ever been on. Fantastic views of mountains for miles and miles, a stream crossing, some scrambling, tree cover, and lots of altitude gave this event lots of flavor.
About two miles into the race I found myself running with another lone soldier. I introduced myself and discovered that his name was Eric. Eric is from Burundi out there in East Africa. He is 15 years old and runs for North High School in Denver. We ran the last 10 miles together exchanging the lead and small conversation from time to time.
At mile ten Eric confesses that he wasn’t supposed to race hard today - so “I’m going to run in behind you so my coach doesn’t kill me”. ‘What?!?’ - i’m thinking. Whatever dude you’re just scared i’ll win. Well, i’d like to think i out kicked him on the last climb to the finish - but I guess I’ll never know.
