Four Inches.
I ran into four inches of powder today. No, really - I ran right into it. And it got into my shoes. It made my socks wet. The snow mixed with dirt and became mud. And that got on my legs. Then I stopped, looked around, and said to myself out loud, “damn, this is cool”.
So today I was running on the back of the first flatiron (I think), located here in b-town on a trail called ‘Saddle Rock’. I departed about 6:15 pm from the Chataqua parking lot and was near the top by about 7/7:05. About this time I’m thinking ‘No one knows where I am. My roommates know I went running, not where. How long would it take them to find my car? Then how long would it take them to find me over here on the back of this mountain, on a trail - judging by the 1 set of footprints in the snow - that is hardly ever traveled? What the hell would I do if I broke my ankle? Got attacked my a mountain lion? Hop 4/5 miles back down on one leg? Wait for help from the people who don’t know where I am to come get me? Um…Die?’
So with that in mind, I decided that I’m going to write a program one of these days for this here blog. I’ll post where I’m going, the time I left, the time I expect to be back, etc. The post will show up in a rather inconspicuous spot - how about under the Wired News Feed. It’ll be my job to alert the blog that I arrived home. Then I’ll build in some controls, say if I don’t ‘unpost’ my run 3/4 hours after I’m supposed to be back it’ll text message my phone to remind me to ‘unpost’. Then if I don’t do that within an hour, it’ll text message/email 3 (that’s a safe number eh?) people with instructions to try to get ahold of me; if they can’t get ahold of me then the instructions will include the contact info of the other 2 people and they will need to get ahold of eachother to decide what to do next.
What do you think? Too much? Leave me a comment and tell me if i’m going overboard here…
